a few more yuletide stories i've liked so far, this round maybe a little less overwhelmingly in the theme of happyjoy:
Curriculum Vitae (bones, gen-ish). all angela, all the time, five jobs, five moments, lovely characterization and, guys, angela.
The Fearless Moral Inventory of Milhouse Van Houten (the simpsons, gen and awww). milhouse is an alcoholic? and also trying not to lie? and in love with lisa? and i was in a bit of a lump on the inside by the end. over, guys, milhouse. it's pretty pretty, but it's still very much the simpsons.
Boustrophedon (the secret history, with the 'cest and all; no drug-soaked orgies this time, though). camilla and charles, camilla and henry. halfly i'm in awe of how something this beautiful can have been made out of the all-mighty clusterfuck that the kids are caught up in; the other half is just happy that, for all the beauty of this, the kids are all still every bit as fucked up as they're supposed to be. very nice writing.
oh, for a quick snorfle: Intruder Alert (thursday next, gen, short).
also, there is Pine Trees and Pigsties (l.m. montgomery's emily series, a variety of pairings, if you will), which, honestly, though prettily written etc., does contain some imagery i'm pretty sure i for one could have very happily lived without ever really contemplating - so i wouldn't necessarily out-right recommend it to anyone with a very strong need to keep the emily bits of their childhood unsullied. ahem. that being said, i thought it an interesting one, and i'm going to say a bit more under a spoiler cut.
(omg wtf, people, kentcest? my eyes, MY EYES. but, if anyone's reading this w/o having read the story, it's about one paragraph out of the story and there's no actual sexing or anything - though aren't you glad that you're now thinking of what that might have been like? *weeps*)
... but now that i've gotten that out of my system - the whole point of the story is, obviously, that neither the kentcesty tones nor any of the rest of it [1] are that much of a stretch from the canon - that it really is the pretty serious potential skeeviness bubbling underneath the canon (pine trees and pigsties indeed) that the fic draws from, and it does rather good at that. frankly, i do have some issues with the some aspects of the story (you know, aside from the sheer trauma :P) - i'm not sure that i entirely agree with the sustainability of the pine trees -half of the reading of the books here, and something about the slide over to the teddy/perry part of it left me feeling not a little uncomfortable - but i'm glad i read it, i'm sure i'll read it again and give it some more thought, i do think it's worth reading if you love your emily books and can handle thinking about the. erm. kentcest and all.
*shudder*
[1] save, obviously, maybe, again, the teddy/perry thing - but, ah, i suppose that has something to do with this crazy new thing called "fanfiction" people keep talking about.
and then, of course, there is Dangerzone (top gun, oh do you think s/he likes me???), in which maverick keeps a diary just like the 13-year-old girl he always was. yes.
