It's one of life's little curiosities, seeing policemen on bikes, on bicycles, on old-fashioned man-powered bicycles, pedaling uphill on cobblestone... Yeah, I don't know. I'm reading Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato with a sort of half-assed attention, and I'm not sure I'm really getting it. The quotes on the back cover proclaim it the most ground-breaking war novel since the invention of war novels, and I'm not sure I'm really getting that from it.

Livejournal as intercultural space, discuss. No, what I'm trying to get to is the way my own awareness of it oscillates. Some days, I just can't get past the presence of the unfamiliar minority position of a non-American, non-English-speaker, and how much of it all is about translating one's daily experience into a [language/culture] that lacks so much of the essential arsenal of shared reference, and whether to shout it from the rooftops and on how many days per week. Though, of course, this must be true for every one of us, between the personal and the public.

Furthermore, furthermore, what they're doing to our central heating system now, yeah that thing, it messes with the cables and leaves me without internet and without television more often than not, eff why eye, do the dance of the dancing monkey and make my day[/-]break and bubble...

Shout it from the rooftops. Then we who had different cultural frameworks can begin to understand yours better, through thought-provoking discussion (e.g., the one about the church the other day).

Because really, even though I live in North America, and speak English, I am still in a slight minority being Canadian rather than American. And I delight in and embrace diversity. Dazzle me.

You know, I have a feeling I end up not-responding to far too many of your comments just because you say things that force me to actually think about my reply, and that always takes time, and. But please don't ever stop. ;)

So, yes, I'm going to think this over for a while - though I definitely agree about supporting that sort of bringing forth of all sorts of cultural differences and discussion.
