on my way to the library, i thought, apropos nothing at all, "i've self-identified as primarily a popslash fan for almost two years now", and, lo, a lightning struck and there was thunder.

I'm taking a break um, from essay-writing, because I'm tired.

Browsing through that yuletide rare fandom suggestions thread the other day - would one of our resident fandom theory scholars (that is, people not so out of touch with the meta as me) tell me where we stand on this these days: How far and wide we've come to extend the terms "fanfic" and "fandom". (Not that it's a new thing, really, weren't we including everything other-text-based in fanfic already when we called that Sargasso Sea book (which I've still not read) Jane Eyre fanfic?) And not that there's anything wrong with it. I like it. I like loosening boundaries, and I like the way it seems that fandom-at-large is apparently making people look at positively everything as potential fic material.

(And there are also more complicated ways of addressing this, but oh the pointlessness of me outlining them here.)

But all of that's idle thought - mostly I care about whether my 15-minute venture into writing The Da Vinci Code slash means that I'm in the TDVC fandom. And then I suddenly wanted to read more TDVC fic and then I *died*.

Soon there will be a blurring of lines between the critical essay and fanfic - wheeee! That will be fun. Yeah, I like that anything's fair game for fanfic. The olympic swimmer slash pretty much said it all.

hee hee hee. yes please.

The olympic swimmer slash pretty much said it all.

If it's out there, it's ficcable! (I'm still waiting for the community to start aknowledging all the numerous My Own Life fandoms, though...)

(and OTOH, with the Olympic swimmers, there was still some sort of a being-a-fan-of involved, wasn't there? I mean, I also find interesting how you're totally not even required to have fannish feelings about your subject any more, just as long as it makes for good fic material. Or, I may also be talking out of my ass.)

I actually made that argument in a paper about 4 years ago - ie. fanfiction activity has a separate appeal from fannish interest.

I may have been the first person in Australia to use the word "fannish" in an academic paper...
