1. Cleverness. (My copy of The Compleat Copywriter tells me that a copywriter whose copy makes someone say, oh, that's clever, has got it wrong. It also tells me that oral contraceptives for men will be the big thing in the 1970s.)
2. Motifs, patterns, devices. Also parallels, symbols.
3. Ambiguous endings: imperfect happiness & underwhelming angst.
4. A good joke.
5. Words that pound a heavy beat.
6. Understatement. God, I'm such a tool of the Man!
7. Unspoken things, unfinished business, thresholds, waiting, weight, crossings, pushings, cookies, stuff.
8. Canon interrogated from the wrong perspective. Also, the right.
9. Road trips.
10. Things that are not amnesia.

Also, two things that have nothing to do with anything:
1. TWIN PEAKS RE-RUNS IN JANUARY.
2. I forgot the other one.
3. Five bucks says the guy played by the poor man's Giovanni Ribisi did it. In whichever show you're watching right now.
